Everything You Need to Know About Luxury Grills

At Outdoor Kitchen Guy, we work with luxury, professional-style grills. The way we see it, we start where your average home improvement store, like Home Depot and Lowes’, stops. We believe you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to grills.

Maybe you have some questions about what type of grill to buy. Or you heard about a professional-grade outdoor grill, like an Alfresco grill, and you want to know what makes it special. Why is a luxury grill a smart investment? First, let’s take a look at what we mean by “luxury grill.”

Luxury, Professional-Style Grills

When we talk about professional-style, high end grills, we’re not just talking about a little charcoal grill. These grills, made by brands such as Alfresco, Hestan, Aspire, Artisan, and Blaze  are made from the highest grade materials. They often come with a rotisserie, high BTU burners, and cast stainless or aluminum burners.

When you’re looking at a top of the line grill, you want to find something that is worth the cost. We’ve discovered that Alfresco grills are well worth the price, and they hold up well over time.

Of course, if you’re looking for a smaller backyard barbeque, you might be able to save on the cost, but the grill won’t last nearly as long. This is because of the materials they use to make the grill.

Most big box store grill options are made out of enamel-coated cast iron or other lower grade materials, while the high quality brands such as Alfresco and Blaze are made out of 304 stainless steel.

What are some of the differences between cast iron and stainless steel? Which one is better for your grill? Here’s a quick rundown of the materials that different brands use to build their grills.

What is the Best Grill Material?

Usually, when you look at a grill, you’ll see that the grate is made out of two main metals: cast iron or stainless steel.

Some cast iron grills have a porcelain enamel coating. This keeps the cast iron from being too porous and soaking up all the oil and grease from the food.

You can also find grills that have a bare cast iron grate. As you can guess, we don’t recommend this.

Cast Iron Grills

A bare cast iron grate will corrode over time, unless you season it properly. Also, cast iron can be difficult to clean

If you have an enamel-coated cast iron grate, this will help with the care and maintenance aspect. You won’t have to worry about corrosion. However, if the grate is dropped, the porcelain enamel might crack.

Overall, cast iron grills are acceptable for small family barbeques, but they aren’t the best option available.

Stainless Steel Grills

The second grill material is 304 stainless steel. We specifically prefer the 304 grade stainless steel, because it holds up well over time.

With a stainless steel grill, like Hestan grills, you can count on the grill’s durability. Stainless steel will not corrode over time. It’s also much easier to clean, and you don’t have to worry about your food sticking to it.

Just like any other product, you get what you pay for. And in the case of stainless steel grills, if you stick with a high-grade steel like 304, you won’t be replacing your grill every couple of years because it has rusted out in Florida’s humid climate.

One downside of stainless steel is that it loses heat quickly. When you turn off the heat, the grill cools off much faster than a cast iron grill. However, luxury grill brands counteract this quick cooldown with powerful burners that go up to 25,000 BTU. So the quick cooling isn’t really an issue.

So which material is the better option?

For our customers, we always recommend a professional style grill made from 304 stainless. Stainless steel is more sanitary, functional, and professional than a cast iron grate.

Will My Grill Rust?

If your grill is made out of 304 stainless steel, it won’t rust. We still recommend cleaning the grill once in a while, but you don’t need to worry about rust if you take proper care of the grill. That isn’t to say that stainless steel is perfect, if you don’t maintain it or abuse it you’re going to have issues.

However, a cast iron grate is guaranteed to rust over time and when you cook on it that rust is going right onto your food which means you’re eating rust. Not exactly one of the four food groups.

Luxury Grill Size

The next factor to consider when you’re choosing a grill is the size. Most outdoor grills are at least 24 inches wide. Most freestanding grills are around 35”, although some can be bigger.

A top-quality grill is often much bigger than your average barbeque. This allows more space for the food, so you can put it all on the grill at once instead of in shifts. With a large grill, you can grill veggies, burgers, and rotisserie all at the same time.

Even though we specialize in Orlando outdoor kitchens, our grills can be built into a cart rather than an Orlando outdoor kitchen. We will design your Orlando outdoor kitchen to fit your grill.

With a luxury grill such as an Alfresco, the size can be up to 56”. It offers a lot of space for grilling, as well as a rotisserie.

Burner Replacements

When you purchase a cheap grill, you will end up paying more for the repairs. Most people however don’t bother to repair the grill they just go out and buy a new one which is the most expensive “repair” you can get!

Unfortunately, that’s just how it works. The cheaper grills are made out of cheaper materials, so you’ll need to replace the burners multiple times. If you have a grill that is less expensive, the burners will be thinner. They usually cost around $50.

With a high grade grill like an Alfresco, the burners are solid and quite a bit larger than the cheap burners and made from higher grade materials and shouldn’t need to be replaced.

But if you need new burners, the luxury grill options will cost quite a bit more money. Many of these burners average around $130, for each one. Again, the idea is that by purchasing a better grill, you won’t need to replace the burners. But this is an important factor to keep in mind. Remember the old adage, you get what you pay for. This is especially true of Orlando outdoor kitchens.

25,000 BTU Burners

Grill power is measured in BTU (British Thermal Units). This is a measure of how much energy the grill uses. When you have a grill with a high BTU, this means it uses a lot more fuel, which means more powerful burners and higher heat. Low BTU grills often can’t get hot enough to sear a steak or put a nice crust on a piece of meat.

So what BTU is the best option?

In the end, it all comes down to each individual, what they want to cook and how important grill power is to them. A grill can have a super high BTU, with a high-powered burner. But this means that you’ll spend a lot more money on fuel and if it isn’t directly plumbed into a gas source you’ll be constantly replacing propane tanks.

On the other hand, a low BTU might not be powerful enough. You save on the fuel, but your grill isn’t strong enough.

We recommend a grill that fits the best of both worlds. For example, Alfresco grills have upwards of 75,000 BTU across several burners. They are high-powered, but can also achieve very low temperatures when not using all burners on low.

Sear burner vs Flame burner

Another feature of a high end grill is the sear burner. Instead of flame burners, like your standard grill, luxury grills often have an infrared sear burner in addition to standard flame burners.

This sear burner is a powerful feature. It can get up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit very quickly, which is perfect for cooking meat and veggies fast. If you’ve ever tried to grill veggies on a big box store grill you know it will take forever and you most likely won’t get those nice grill marks. You need really high heat to achieve that.

A flame burner can’t reach those temperatures, so with a flame burner, your food will take longer to cook, and it may not have the same sear and grill marks.

The Alfresco grill has a sear burner that looks like a honeycomb. It’s much more even and uniform than a flame burner, so you can use every inch of it to its full potential. A sear burner can get your food seared to perfection, in just a couple of minutes.

For our last point, let’s take a look at the features and benefits of a high quality grill.

The Features and Benefits of a High Quality Grill

We’ve gone over a few of the qualities you can find in a high-power grill. To find a good grill, some of the things to look for include:

  • Grill built out of 304 stainless steel
  • Can be built into an Orlando outdoor kitchen
  • Fairly high BTU, to get the right balance of fuel usage and power
  • Sear burner
  • Insulated Hoods
  • Interior Lights
  • Stainless steel grate (not cast iron)
  • A size that comfortably fits multiple foods at once.

If you’re in the market to find a grill that works for you, you want to get the best one. Why spend money and time on a grill that’s going to break in a year?

Of course, we know that Alfresco grills meet all of these standards for a top-notch grill. Also, some other brands that have these features include Blaze, Wolf and Hestan grills.

The benefits of a luxury grill are well worth the investment.

Your food will be seared nicely, and cooked to perfection. A luxury grill offers amazing grill marks, because the food won’t stick to the grate.

You’ll also find that it’s a lot easier to cook veggies on a luxury grill. A powerful grill can roast veggies much faster than your standard backyard grill.

And when your grill has a high BTU and powerful sear burner, you’ll get chicken, burgers, and steak with maximum flavor, every time. The grill is engineered to keep the heat in, and this helps create a beautiful maillard effect on the meat, without making it dry.
